Richmond's Hope arose from Richmond Craigmillar Church's work in helping local children who have suffered bereavement. The project now supports them throughout their grief, using theraputic play, and provides a safe haven for them to work out their feelings and emotions. It aims to inmprove children's self esteem through sharing experiences, and also increase the public understanding of the issues involved. Each child will have an individual programme of care and referrals can be made by schools, doctors, social workers, voluntary agencies and churches of all denominations.
An unused balcony at the rear of Richmond Craigmillar Church was converted to provide accommodation for the project. Comprising a large play room and adjacent office space at first floor level, with a new access stair and upgraded entrance. The stair enclosure provided the greatest challenge aesthetically as it had to be inserted into a symmetrical and formal space, while not conflicting with the unusual style of the church interior.
The result is a modern and striking intervention, which complements the simple aesthetics of the original church design.
Funding for the project comes from The Community Fund, Lloyds TSB, Children in Need, the Scottish Churches Community Trust and the Church of Scotland.
